We start this tour by exploring the volcanism history of Hekla in the Hekla center at Leirubakki. Then we head for a meeting with the “Queen” of our countryside where you will be standing foothill to Volcano Hekla viewing the lava fields that have flowed in earlier eruptions. Following we will visit some of our most spectacular local hot spots – beautiful waterfalls and breathtaking wonders of Icelandic nature!
Mt. Hekla is the most active volcano in Europe and after 1970 with eruption pattern every 10 year. Since settlement of Iceland it is believed Hekla has had at least twenty eruptions. Hekla’s last eruption was in February 2000 and lasted for twelve days.
Once our Queen was thought to be the gateway to hell for condemned souls according to old tales.
Our guides are knowledgable in geological history, Icelandic culture, saga and folktales. They love telling you local stories – fresh and old, true and false.
