Jökulsárlón (Glacier lagoon) is a large glacial lake located in southeast Iceland at the end of an outlet glacier of the great Vatnajökull. It developed into a lake after the glacier started receding from the edge of the Atlantic ocean and is considered as one of Iceland’s natural wonders. The lagoon is filled with huge chunks of ancient icebergs breaking off from Vatnajökull glacier and drifting into the lake where it melts away. Because the lagoon is open to the sea you can you can see huge pieces of ice that have been drifting downstream from the lagoon ending up on a nearby black sand beach – phenomenon sight your camera will love to capture. Also you might spot some seals residing in the lagoon. Due to Jökulsárlón immense beauty it has become one of Iceland’s most popular attraction and has been the setting for many Hollywood movies.
On our way to the extraordinary Glacier lagoon we will view some of Iceland’s most phenomenal sites. We will visit majestic waterfalls plunging down from ancient sea cliffs and the Black sand beach displaying fantastic sights such as fascinating basalt column formation and the pyrotechnic Reynisdrangar sea stacks.
Along the way is a view of many glaciers as our famous Eyjafjallajökull that erupted in 2010, Öræfajökull and Svínafellsjökull. Finding yourself in the presence with of one of those glaciers is an experience you will long remember.
On the way to the lagoon we will stop for lunch in a restaurant or and if you prefer have a stop in some of the shops on the way to pick up refreshments.
